The Barleywine beer category began as a deeply malty, high strength ale from England. Americans make a version that has more hops added, because, of course they do. Barleywines are so named as they are a showcase of intense malted barley and have wine-like alcohol strength. These powerful and complex beers have flovours of brown bread, caramel, honey, molasses and toffee.

If you are looking for a delicious sipper but aren't interested in stouts at the moment, these are the answer. Of course these beauties age gracefully too, so don't hesitate to stash a few away in a dark place for winter too.
