Schioppettino is a rare variety in Australia that originates from Friuli in North East Italy. It neared extinction in its homeland until efforts were made in the 1970s to propagate it (in secret as it was so rare that is was actually no longer an authorised variety in the region). It is naturally very high in the compound rotundone, which is responsible for the pepper character in wines. It is a very late ripening variety that is proving very difficult to grow as it has very poor fruit set and suffers from early season basal leaf senescence.
Delicate, with a floral lift. Violets, red fruits, and a touch of peppery spice in its aroma. Red currants, bold cherry and spice accompanied by soft persistent tannins and refreshing acidity.
