Our 2022 vintage marks a new development for Serrat.

For the first time we are releasing a wine from fruit not grown on our terroir, the Serrat property.

So, we’ve called it Serrat Autres Terres (pronounced "otruh teruh”), meaning another terroir.

We are enjoying working with different parcels, but true to our ethos, we will only ever use grapes that we would have been proud to grow ourselves.

The wine is a 2022 Nenagh Park Pinot Noir. The grapes come from a superb east-facing vineyard, tucked into the Christmas Hills range just west of the Yarra Glen township.

The Nenagh Park vineyard was established in 1989 by legendary Yarra Valley Viticulturist Stephen Sadlier, on a property that has been in his family for over 130 years.

Tom and Steve go back a long way. They met when Tom was first appointed as Chief Winemaker at Yering Station in 1996 and formed a lasting friendship. Nenagh Park fruit was purchased by Yering Station and on several occasions was classified into the Yering Station Reserve Pinot Noir. The vineyard was released from long term contracts just prior to the 2022, so we jumped at the chance to secure the fruit. It was an opportunity not to be missed!

The block is only two acres and is planted with a mix of clones, MV6, 667 and Pommard - all the top clones a winemaker could wish for. The vineyard has a gentle slope on classic Yarra Valley grey clay soils with the buckshot stone in the top soil. The east-facing aspect ensures the first rays of light bathe the vineyard from the early hours, while providing shelter from the hot afternoon sun. With the stunning site coupled with Steve’s long experience in the Yarra Valley, it is no surprise that the fruit from the little patch is so highly regarded.

This wine is  a blend of the oldest vines from 1989, being MV6 Pinot Noir, plus a proportion of newer plantings of 667 and Pommard clone. We added about 30% whole bunch in the ferments in 2022, left on skins for 14 days. It was aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons, on lees for 11 months, with 25 % new oak from the Tronacis forest.

The bouquet is classic Yarra Pinot Noir, lots of fragrance and aromas in the red fruit spectrum, strawberry, raspberry, red currant and cherry, The whole bunch adds a floral element, hints of rose petals and a touch of spice.

The palate is generous and silky with lovely volume and mouth coating tannins. It’s extremely well balance at this stage, but as it opens in the glass some lovely fine chalk tannins come to life and drive the long and detailed finish.
